In steel production, the innovative upgrade of converter slag blocking plugs has played an important role in reducing costs and increasing efficiency, which is reflected in the following aspects:

Converter slag blocking plug

Improving the quality of molten steel: If slag is removed in the early stage of converter steelmaking, it will affect the quality of molten steel, leading to phosphorus and sulfur recovery. The new slag blocking plug can more effectively reduce slag discharge in the early stage of the converter, such as the new soft slag blocking plug tested in the steelmaking plant of Tiangang Company, which reduces the average phosphorus return of ordinary carbon steel grades by 0.0029% and low phosphorus steel grades by 0.0035%. There is also a new production method for slag blocking plugs developed by enterprises. After being put into use, the phenomenon of phosphorus recovery in molten steel is significantly reduced, and the degree of corrosion of ladle refractory materials is greatly reduced. The qualification rate of molten steel has increased from 99.5% to 99.9%.

Improving alloy yield: By reducing the amount of slag, the composition of the molten steel is more stable, which can reduce the reaction between alloy elements and slag, thereby improving the alloy yield. After using soft slag blocking plugs in the steelmaking plant of Tiangang Company, the silicon recovery rate increased by 1.4%, which can save alloy costs of 20.84 yuan/furnace.

Reduce deoxidizer consumption: If the slag blocking effect is not good during converter steelmaking, the amount of steel slag in the ladle will increase, and a large amount of deoxidizer needs to be consumed for deoxidation modification of the steel slag during refining. And the slag blocking plug can effectively control the amount of slag discharged, thereby reducing the consumption of deoxidizer. For example, a steel plant can save 200 kilograms of slag per furnace, which can save 4.4 million yuan in deoxidizer consumption per year.

Extending the service life of equipment: The slag stopper effectively blocks slag, reducing the erosion of steel slag on the refractory materials of the ladle and the steel outlet area, prolonging the service life of the ladle and steel outlet refractory materials, reducing the frequency of refractory material replacement, and lowering production costs. The new slag blocking plug developed by a certain enterprise has increased the success rate of slag blocking from 90% to 99%, significantly extending the service life of ladle refractory materials.

Improving slag blocking efficiency: Traditional converter slag blocking processes such as slag blocking ball method usually have an efficiency of less than 70%. However, using converter slag blocking plugs to remove steel can increase the slag blocking efficiency to 96%, with a slag layer ≤ 40mm, which can more accurately control the amount of slag removed from the steel and reduce steel quality problems and production losses caused by untimely or inadequate slag blocking.

Reduce labor intensity for workers: Some new slag blocking plugs are used in conjunction with automated equipment, such as skateboard slag blocking systems, which can accurately determine the presence of slag in the steel through an infrared slag detection system, and promptly transmit signals to link the closure of the steel outlet skateboard, avoiding inaccurate manual judgment of the degree of steel slag separation and resulting in slag discharge. This greatly reduces the intensity of slag blocking operations for personnel and reduces the probability of misjudgment in predicting slag blocking timing manually.
